Weston Super Mare RFC 12 Gordano Sharks 36 Report by Number 8, Alex Reynolds (With a little help from his Dad, me thinks!)

Gordano travelled to the seaside following a five week layoff due to waterlogged pitches and the Christmas break. The early exchanges were even and the game looked as if it was going to be a battle of attrition with the larger Weston forwards favourites on a heavy pitch.

Lewis Leaker had other ideas however, and following his quick thinking from a tapped penalty he danced over for the opening try.

The platform for success was laid by the forward effort of Harry Purnell, Eddie Tovey, Charlie Geary and Zak Wall. Alex Reynolds showed some good link work and had one memorable break which showed pace and aggression.

Half time saw the teams turn around with 5 points each, a scant reward for 30 minutes of hard fought but fair Rugby.

The Gordano Supporters, as always were hanging on every word of Phil Ford as he summed up the game so far and what he expected for the next half hour to come. Dave Hodge wondered if he could make it to the Club house for a coffee but decided that a 600 metre walk at that time of day could be dangerous for a man of his age and girth!

So, light the blue touch paper and stand back.

Jordan Mitchell ran strong and hard for his two tries and showed that genuine pace will always overcome a heavy pitch. Gordano looked as though they had the game sewed up when Weston scored and converted to bring the scores to 15 to 12.

Finn Murphy who brings dynamic running, aggression and passion to go with considerable skill levels featured strongly in attack and defence. Shay Ford scorched what little grass remained on the pitch with two tries of sheer class, balance and one side step which will be remembered for a long time.

Lewis claimed a fine individual try under the posts. Sam Hodge came alive and was a thorn in the side of Weston. Connor Fairclough was a colossus and operated in the dark nasty places where only true warriors ply their trade. Weston tried to tap and go with their big guys only for Connor to smash them backwards and make them think again.

Every member of the Squad played their part and should be proud of a wonderful performance.

This game of Rugby was an illustration of all that is good about the sport. Pride, guts determination, discipline and fair play were displayed by both teams in abundance.
