First win of the new year

What a performance! It was a bit disappointing that the teams were limited to ten-a-side and uncontested scrums. But we certainly made the most of it! At times our passing and running were electric, leading to a comfortable win against some strong opposition.
In the first half there were some great tackles, particularly from Erin, Carrie, Ruth, Alice and Marlow, who sadly had to retire with concussion after a rather dubious tackle. Surely there should be at least a penalty for this dangerous play? A good, fair tackle shouldn't lead to a head injury!
The half was crowned by two wonderful tries apiece for Erin and Nina. Indeed their performance with Alice in the back row was a key factor in our success.
Erin's second try was a particularly good team effort with some lightning fast interplay. Rugby is a simple game - cross their line with straight, strong running and good support!
The back row was also prominent in the second half, as was Izzy, who had another excellent game with her strong running and tackling! Kath, Gemma, Sam, and Lize also had some great runs. After great recovery work by Nina near our line, Alice had the try line at her mercy. Despite her best efforts to be Somerset's Usain Bolt, glory was snatched from her grasp! But well done anyway! Ginny also had an outstanding run - brilliant!
Ruth's goal kicking and punting were excellent. Four conversions were justified reward for the new Jonny Wilkinson of Gordano! Like the English maestro, her tackling was also first class! Well done! The back row was again vital to our defence, ably assisted by Lize, Carrie and Izzy.
Scrums
We are strong but the system is weak! How often do we have to have uncontested scrums before the authorities take tougher action?
Lineouts
Good work by Sam and Ginny, well done!
Rucks
Good driving play from the back row, and Kath also did some great work in this vital area of the game.
Forward of the game
Alice - another pint for this fearless dynamo who tackled, rucked and ran with her usual gusto. Erin and Nina were also outstanding.
A special mention for Kath, one of the team's unsung heroes. Always the key foundation of our powerful scrum, she is a great captain and forward!
