Clinical Winscombe break Gordano's spirits

After successfully dispatching Keynsham III at home last week Gordano 2nds travelled to Winscombe, with a number of regular players missing and any journey which is forty minutes from the club, a few cry offs and no shows which seems to becoming a trend of late, Gordano travelled with a minimum of 16 players thanks to Paul Randell who made the trip and went on the bench for cover if needed as he was carrying a hamstring injury.

Despite in recent games being slow off the mark within the first few minutes Gordano found themselves 5 points up thanks to quick ball and Daniel McCallum cutting a great line to go through under the posts with Nick Moore adding the extras. Winscombe woke up and within 10 minutes brought the scores level with a try similar to Gordano's. After such a good start Gordano found themselves out of shape in defense, which created gaps for the Winscombe backs to exploit and with their fullback coming into the back line and creating numerous overlaps. Winscombe tallied up the points and before the half hour mark found themselves 21-7 up. Although Winscombe were the more clinical side the game wasn't going all their way. Gordano were winning the set piece battle in the scrums and lineouts, only to find the backs making basic errors in handling and decision making and on the other side when the backs did make good use of the ball they found themselves let down by the forwards lack of support and fitness at getting to the break downs quick enough leaving them isolated.

21-7 Half Time

After talking at half time about how we turned Weston over when we were in a similar situation before. Gordano started the second half in the same vain as the first, basic mistakes and numerous missed tackles allowed Winscombe from the offset to score again. Gordano carried on trying to play rugby but did not build any phases successfully and when Winscombe attacked knowing they were in front greed took over for a few of their players and rather than pass kept getting stopped short of the line, when Winscombe did offload the ball on one of their many over lapping runs with numbers then they would score. Gordano's defense failed to come up as a line and was dogged legged and when it did come up as a line missed tackles kept Gordano on the back foot. After Winscombe felt comfortable they brought on their numerous substitutions throughout the half which were agreed too and which evened out the game. Gordano found themselves on the front foot and in the opponents 22 but failed to create anything to unlock or trouble Winscombe in the long run. And with time running out Winscombe sealed the win with another score to end Gordano's misery.

Final Score 43 - 7

Special thanks to Tom Harris who usually plays on the wing and stepped into second row and did a sterling job, to Paul Randell who made the trip and despite being injured made himself available and to Simon Childs who helped out and played well. After Winscombe naming Ben Clark as their choice for man of the match I have given it too him. Lads a big effort is needed if we are going to continue at the top end of the table as we have only won twice away this season and only lost one at home this season, lets make an effort to get to training and get a good team spirit going, as I believe that can win games in itself and make ourselves fitter, myself included as it really showed this Saturday.

Also Christmas Jumpers this Saturday £5 FINE which will go into the tour fund for those that don't and party at the club til late after, lets finish this year off on a good note with win @ home when we welcome Stothert & Pitt II to Caswell Lane
