sharks swim away with a win at chew valley

You will have to forgive me as this is the first match report I’ve had to write!

After turning up to an empty car park and a very wet pitch the match was in doubt but after chatting with Chew’s coach it was agreed that the match would still go ahead. 15 minutes each way ensured there would be enough match time for it not to have been a wasted journey.

Chew won the toss and chose to start, Weather conditions left the coaches contemplating if Gordano would be ready for the game ahead. However, from the start the boys took the game straight to their opposition playing a brave running game; using the pace of the faster players. The first try was scored by number 8, Isaac Bar, after a long run just as the rain came down even harder. Fly half, Aaron Southey, had a valiant attempt at a conversion; unfortunately a strong cross wind took it wide.

A well timed pass to prop Ethan Ando reminded the Gordano coaches that props can run! Ethan sped down ¾ of the pitch to score. Sadly the conversion, by second row Sam Chigbo narrowly missed the posts.

From the kick Chew Valley rearranged themselves and stopped Gordano making any ground for a while. Strong running from second row Ollie Heaven proved too much for the opposition’s backs and he took play into Chew’s 22. Support play from James Hawkins and Kody Golding helped hooker Ed Magromalis drive downfield. Superb defense from Chew Valley halted Ed just meters short of the try line. Luckily for Gordano, some quick thinking from Ethan Ando helped to secure a third try. Again the strong side wind defied Aaron of the conversion as the ref blew for half time.

Both of Gordano’s kicking attempts, to begin the second half, fell short of the ten meter line resulting in a scrum to Chew Valley. This slowed Gordano but didn’t dampen their spirits. Ethan Ando made the most of a handling error by Chew taking their defense by surprise and scored under the posts, giving him a hat-trick. Allowing full back Macie King a clear shot at the conversion.

Chew had a burst of life only to be met by fierce resistance from Aaron Southey, Matt Cashman, Finlay Rowland, Jacob Clements and Josh Gwynn. Turn over ball permitted Macie King to open his legs only to be abruptly stopped by Chew Valley’s 10 meter line. The ball was recycled into the hands of Isaac Barr who ran between the posts to score his second of the game, which Macie converted with ease.

Credit where credit is due Chew Valley didn't give up, making it hard work for Gordano to get much further into their half. A harsh decision by the ref against Chew gave Gordano a scrum 5 meters from the try line. Quick thinking, by scrum half James Hawkins, at the back of the scrum ensured Gordano ended the game on a high. Macie attempted the conversion but missed as the ref blew the final whistle.

I’m sorry if I have missed anybody out but this is only the high lights.
