Match Report by Gary Townsend (Coach)

Gordano V St Marys OB (Home) March 9th 2014
Lost 21 – 47

Sharks welcomed St Mary’s Old Boys to Caswell Lane, where the weather was glorious and the first team pitch in surprisingly good decision.

Sharks found themselves under pressure from the start with St Mary’s No.8, fly-half and centre dominating proceedings. A simple backs move resulted in a try from the outside centre, which was converted. Although Mary’s scored 3 further tries, the score did not reflect the competitiveness of the game. Sharks came back to put Mary’s under pressure and from a tap penalty, No. 8 Jordan Shaddick scored

The second half was a far more even contest, with the Sharks pack gaining dominance in the loose. Sam Merrick, Ryan Kay, Sam Kessler and Pete Atherton were tireless and turned the ball over on numerous occasions. Winger Matt Wilkinson and full-back Adam Chadwick had some fine runs, and their go forward attitude galvanised the Sharks to greater things. With the 3 dominant Mary’s players finding life more difficult, Mary’s were forced to work harder which brought other players to the fore.

Mary’s scored 3 further tries, with one right on the final whistle – however Sharks scored a couple of fine tries themselves through a wonderfully worked try which ended in Jacob Evans feeding off a ball from George Briggs, who was unflustered by a high tackle, to regain his feet and make headway, and a try for Macauley Chesson who supported well and sped the 55 metres to score close to the corner, All 3 tries being converted

Mary’s deserve a great deal of credit for their resolute defence and appetite to go forward. Their handling was very good, although waivered a little when under pressure in the second half. Sharks too can be proud of a fine effort which saw all 26 players rotated throughout the game. A far better performance than the previous week and an attitude and work ethic which is a fairer representation of their ability, effort and commitment..
