Gordano 26 v Clevedon 0 (Away)

Match report by Gary Townsend (Coach)

Gordano V Clevedon (Away), January 5 2014

0 - 26

The first game in 2014 was always going to be a tough encounter against a well organised & resolute Clevedon side, and so it proved to be. Excellent refereeing by Clevedon ensured an excellent game of rugby, regardless of the outcome. Good control of the breakdown and off-side enabled both sides to play the game with ambition.

The target for Sharks was to score 3 tries, which they had never done previously against Clevedon. A solid scrum platform added to a determination to off-load and avoid the breakdown soon paid dividends with a hole appearing in the defence, and the ever alert flanker Jordan Shaddick taking advantage from 40 metres out to make the score between the posts, converted by Huw Evans. Not long after, fine approach work and off-loading allowed winger Matt Wilkinson to score his 4th try in as many matches, with a fine conversion from wide out by Evans.

Further breaks from centres Macualey Chesson and George Briggs came to nothing following exceptional scramble defence from the Clevedon side.

Following the half-time break the Sharks side became even more focussed in pursuit of the 3rd try – adding resilient defence to attacking ambition. In this regard Ben Critchley and James Appleby led the way, with support from props JB and Ollie Maggs. Backs and forwards integrated well, with near to total rugby on display. Will Hawkins, Alex Bowell, Jack Thornton and George Coulson worked tirelessly in the tight and breakdown to create quick ball, which winger Wes Wan exploited with some darting runs. Loose-head Jamie Judd was prominent with some strong incursions into the Clevedon defence which tied in defenders and made good ground to create space for the in form back

Further breaks came from Sam Kessler, Wan and Briggs but the Clevedon defence held strong and the 3rd try looked to be all but gone, when an excellent break from Kessler and off-load, with support either side, saw the pacey Jacob Evans score between the posts.

5 minutes later, Kessler also scored a fine try himself following a determined 35 metre run which was converted by Hamish Bonar.

With 26 players being rotated and the introduction of debutant Owen Williams this was possibly the finest performance in 3 years by the Sharks squad, but credit must also go to a Clevedon side who never gave up and who provided an example of character, resolve and commitment. Sharks will need to be at their best when the sides next meet in order to come anywhere close to scoring as many tries.
