Gordano play Barbarians style rugby to impress in final home game of season

The first post Easter Sharks match at a sunny but blustery graveyard pitch in Portbury offered the visitors a chance to redress the autumn 2015 result. They came with determination to test the Red and Black line.

However from the opening kick off Gordano's Leon Paul starting the game at tight head prop scored the first of the home sides tries with a run from his own half which Isaac Barr converted. Nailsea and Backwell fought back to attempt to get into the Sharks 22. Gordano recovered the ball after a series of well defended phases of visitor attack and James Hawkins supporting from right wing ran half the pitch to touch down under the posts (conv. Barr). The third Sharks try was a Fly Half Isaac Barr sprint from the half way after a defence busting side step which Leon Paul converted.

The quality of Gordano defensive work playing uphill and against the wind, was again a feature of a Sharks first half where, while the opponents dominated possession, scoring only came to the home side. With every player trying new positions it was a great performance to be leading 21-0 at half time.

Macie King back at fly half, kicked off the second half with the wind behind the Sharks. Gordano had their first period of sustained time in the opposition half. Both defences worked hard to disrupt the opposition and first ten minutes saw possession change back and forward. Finally, following an effective Macie King kick and pick up, Ed Magromalis opened the second half scoring.

From the visitors kick off Kody Golding playing loose head prop drove forward 30m and started an attack with a well timed offload which after a couple of phases, returned to him to score the fifth Sharks try. Minutes later after sustained pressure Nailsea and Backwell opened their scoring of the match with a try from close range.

After a high tackle awarded the home side a penalty, fast distribution supported by excellent hands and alignment from Isaac Barr and Aaron Southey back in the Centres culminating in another Macie King attacking kick wide behind the defence put Left wing Sam Chigbo through for a try. This was closely followed by fantastic period of fifteen man running rugby; Leon Paul's (now in the Backs) second try of the afternoon, an Aaron Southey touch down under the posts and then Kody Golding's (from Full Back) second try after wing Matt Eichenberger's excellent drawing of the defence down the right wing and pinpoint pass, followed by Isaac Barr's second try of the morning as the Sharks dominance converted into points.

N&B never gave up making the game a great spectacle, but the final points of the 69-5 victory came from Leon Paul's third score of the day which Macie King converted to finish the home teams strong performance. The whole squad showed they could have impact and fun, even in unfamiliar positions, in a dominant show of Gordano strength.
