Big defence keeps a big opposition at bay

On the bottom pitch Gordano took on Bridgwater's finest. The early minutes saw a great Leon Paul try against the wind after the Sharks backs spread the ball wide committing the defence to allow the full back to come into the line and to score from his own half. Sharks dominated early possession and spread the ball effectively but were repelled by firm tackling from the visitors. The score remained at 5 nil until pressure led to a Morganians line out 5m out from their own line which Sam Chigbo took and dived over to double the lead.

Repeated late tackles led to a Morganian sin binning after 25 minutes which seemed to wake the visitors up. Their spell into the Sharks 22 was broken with a decisive shove from the home pack and a weaving run and pace by fly half Macie King to score their third try. The 15-0 lead was sustained until half time. Gordano spirit had dominated the half led by inspirational skipper Kody Golding and excellent line speed and tackling in defence.

The second half started as the first had with a Leon Paul breakout try, this time following a kick and good chase which meant he was first to the the ball on from the defences 10m line hacking on to control expertly near the line and to drop on to score, which he converted. Again the visitors pushed into the Sharks 22 but the defence stayed strong and counter attacked, an attempted pass was intercepted and Morganians attacked down the right with good support to go in for their try which was well converted to make it 22-7.

From that point in the second half Morganians dominated possession but the score stayed at 22-7, as a result of Sharks consistent tackling and defensive organisation. A visit to the visitors 22 led to a Gordano sin binning with 13 minutes to play and possession returned to the Morganians. A kick into the hosts 22 established their position but erratic passing allowed the home side to attack ending in a Sharks 5m scrum. Fierce visitor resistance in the final 5 minutes stopped any further scoring and a final score of 22-7 was warmly celebrated by the home crowd on the hill.
