Sharks excel in their open style of running rugby but can't match the aggression of the opposition

The U16s took to the top pitch looking to extend their winning run to four matches and continue the high quality seen in recent weeks. The visitors fielded 12 players which offered the Red and Blacks the open game they have favoured all season.
Sharks let the visitors take the initiative and trouble their try line with some loose handling and generosity at their set pieces. Midsummer Norton opened the scoring with an uncoverted try. Sharks responded assertively and were rewarded by a Kody Golding interception and touchdown. The visitors continued to recycle more efficiently and dominate territory and possession. Against the run of play Macie King punted over the visitors back line for Isaac Barr to catch the bounce and touch down.
Sharks began to match the opposition’s aggression and were rewarded with more time in the visitor’s half. However, Norton fought their way from their own 22 to score a try under the posts and take a 2 point lead. The visitor’s confidence to run was helped by Sharks offering them the space to move the ball. A third unconverted try followed and stretched the lead. Macie King led the response with a solo try for Gordano but conversions continued to elude them. A halftime score of 15-17 emphasised the even nature of the match.
The second half continued the end to end action with the scoring opened by Connor King running the length of the pitch to set up his brother Macie’s second try. The Norton response was another assertive foray into the opposition 22 ultimately rewarded with a fourth try. Their fifth try was a solo effort which was aided by loose tackling from the Red and Blacks.
A Golding and Aaron Southey double act exchanged passes until Kody touched down under the posts and Macie King converted to level the scores at 27 all.
The final quarter continued the openness of the previous three quarters of the game, with the outcome finely balanced. All set pieces were fiercely contested and the loose featured well executed turn overs. Finally, Midsomer Norton resolve was rewarded with a try and a narrow 5 point lead. The visitors finished the stronger and a final converted try stretched their lead to 27-39 which was where the last battle of Sharks U16s season ended with a defeat in the match but massive improvement over the year from the whole squad and a winning season.
