Positive performance in attack and defence gives Gordano a win against committed opposition

A sunny spring morning saw Sharks relish a return to Chew Valley and a highly competitive game. The first minutes showed two ambitious attacking sides wanting to play expansive running rugby. A great first quarter featured phases of positive play by both sides although the finishing pass would not come for visitors or hosts.
The deadlock was finally broken by a practiced backs move that set Kody Golding off, legs pumping, to cross under the posts (conv Leon Paul). Chew recovered the ball from the kick off and only a try saving tackle from Macie King kept them out. Leon Paul recovered the second of the hosts pushes for a try and kicked out to restore field position.
The hosts continued to attack and only solid defence resisted a score. Jacob Clements was the next to save Sharks try line. A Chew penalty awarded in the Sharks 22 was not met with the same organisation and the hosts pulled the score back to 5-7 with a well worked try.
Chew’s effective use of the boot gave them a final sortie into Gordano’s 22 but more spirited defence from all of the team ended the half with their narrow lead sustained. The captain Macie King had kept the team positive against a very well-matched opposition.
Sharks learnt from their opposition to establish early field position. The rock-solid Sharks line out had their first uncharacteristic error. When the ball was kicked out of the hosts 22 Finn Rowland secured the ball and the visitors unleashed Leon Paul who went through the defensive line with great pace and footwork, touched down and converted his try. Gordano battled their way up field and the pressure told as Isaac Barr intercepted as Chew attempted to run out from under their posts to snipe a third try for Sharks converted by Macie King to make it 5-21.
The hosts recovered composure but repeated turn overs and fierce defensive play ensured the 16 point lead. A second Isaac Barr interception this time in his own 22, set Ethan Ando off on a 75m run but great defence pulled him down 5m out, but incredible pace from second row Connor Adams meant he was there to take a pop pass to go over for another 5 points.
Chew never stopped pushing but Sharks consistent commitment to the tackle repelled the green and white attack. Another Clements smash in the final minute turned over the ball and the captain crowned a great game with a solo run, stopped short 10m from a final Sharks flourish. The final score of 5-26 was testament to the most complete squad performance of the season and one of this teams most complete ever.
