Clevedon win local Derby with strong performance at Caswell Lane

In previous seasons Clevedon squads have shown their superiority in the annual clashes whether home or away. The home side, coached by John Critchley in Steve Gazzard’s absence, took to the top pitch intent on establishing their strengthened performance over the last 12 months. A full squad lined up for the January clash.
The hosts kicked off with intent but a fierce first Clevedon foray was rewarded with a try in the corner. Gordano seemed shaken by the initial points conceded and after spirited Clevedon attack gave up territory and further tries. Sharks attempts to run from their 22 were let down by handling errors and the visitors dominance enabled them to build a 17 nil lead.
Sharks response was led by tackling and turnovers by Kody Golding. Phases of play were topped by a kick to the Clevedon line by Isaac Barr. Matt Eichenberger ripped the ball from the defender to score the first home points. However hesitant set pieces and tackling surrendered territory and further points. Gordano finally lifted their performance to push back into the Clevedon 22 but met spirited resistance. In the closing minutes of the half Sharks tackling stopped the visitors repeatedly until a final converted try brought the score to 5-29 to Clevedon.
The second half started off with Gordano still hampering their play with loose passes and missed tackles which inevitably led to conceded points. While tackling improved Sharks struggled with ball retention and became stuck in their own half. For 15 minutes neither side broke free until Clevedon used the full width of the pitch for their seventh try.
Sharks revived their game with more attacking direction, led by Kody Golding’s continued direct running. It was rewarded with first territory and then time spent in the opposition 22. It was not converted into points and Clevedon then fought their way to the Sharks try line. Gordano’s improved defensive work could not stop the visitors back line crossing for a further converted try.
Leon Paul led a final attack from 22 to 22 that ultimately led to the Sharks being stopped 1 metre from their second try. The 5-50 final score told the home side there was more work to be done before next seasons clashes.
