Fast and entertaining rugby played in great spirit

The Sharks took to the field with a will to return to their winning ways after last week’s narrow defeat. It was a first ever game against Bristol Saracens for this squad. The hosts are still building their own U16s so there were some familiar faces in green at the kick off of an 11 a side game
Both sides recognised there would be plenty of space in a fast paced opening. The hosts started strongly and moved the ball outside of the Gordano defence to cross early and open the scoring with a converted try. Gordano responded within 5 minutes with full back Leon Paul picking up and opposition kick running down the right and gaining good support at the breakdown to win quick ball allowing quick hands through the backs to Isaac Barr on the left wing to run in a try from half way converted by Macie King to even the scores. A superb clear-out by Ed Magromalis again allowed clean ball to be passed to the right for a second Isaac Barr try (conv. King) which was closely followed by a strong run from the kick off by Ethan Ando on his own 22 drawing defenders and timing the pass perfectly to Leon Paul to sprint from the left under the posts and convert himself to take the visitors lead to 7-21.
The second quarter’s first highlight was a Finn Lynton-Jenkins last ditch try-saving tackle in the Sharks 22 which became try making when the spilled ball allowed the ball to be moved left with great quick hands from Finn Rowland to allow Isaac Barr the space to run the length of the pitch to touch down under the posts and convert his own try. Following the conversion another great turnover from Jacob Clements followed by distribution across the back line set up Ethan Ando’s first try of the season with tighthead Jayden Brown always in support. Saracen’s struck back taking advantage of a lapse in concentration by the defence who left space from a penalty on the right for Saracens to spot the opportunity with a scrambling defence keeping them out but from a quick penalty 10m out only Aaron Southey came off the line to allow an easy score. Saracens kept up the pressure and from a scrum 10m out their quick-footed scrum half brushed off three tackles to score the third try and leave half time score at 21-33.
Sharks started the third quarter strongly with a scrum in their own 22 and quick hands allowing Isaac Barr to run down the left with a great step off his left foot to beat the final defender and running in under the posts (conv Leon Paul) then from the kick off Isaac caught the ball on his own 22 beat the first two defenders and kicked diagonally to the left side of the pitch putting pressure on the covering defender who mis-handled allowing Isaac to pick up and draw the final defender to feed Aaron Southey working hard to provide support for his season scoring debut (conv Ethan Sefton). The lead was also a tribute to Finn Lynton-Jenkins whose tacking of the formidable Saracen’s number 3 stopped him repeatedly when in try scoring positions.
The final quarter continued the fast and open entertaining rugby. Ed Magromalis, playing out of position in the backs, showed his dancing feet on a couple of breakouts with only the final off-load going astray during a period of brilliant rugby. The visitors took turnover ball to run strongly and open their second-half scoring. Gordano’s drift defence and line speed caused a turnover out wide and brilliant passing in midfield from Ethan Sefton allowed the long-striding second row Connor Adams to make it within 10m of the try line when tap tackled, first supporter there was Jacob Clements who was also held up by the committed defence when supported by Connor. Saracens moved the ball well to go under the posts to take the score to 35-47 before the Sharks back line got back into top gear and a final pass from Ed Magromalis set up a Macie King try in the corner. Ethan Ando kicked out of defence and with Ed Magromalis and Macie King putting pressure on Saracens, Finn Rowlands finished the morning with an interception try (conv. King) to seal a 35-59 victory.
A feature of the match was the 100% commitment all Sharks players showed whether wearing the red or the green. The squad show a maturity that bodes well for the challenges in the weeks ahead.
