Mud, glorious mud

After a one sided fixture earlier in the season, Sharks entertained a big Chew Valley side at Caswell Lane knowing that this would be a different Chew XV.

The match kicked off at the same time as the rain which would have an effect on the way the match unfolded. The first 20 minutes were even stevens with both sides looking dangerous with the ball in hand, but it was a moment of class from Sharks fly half Ed Moss which broke the deadlock. Spotting the Chew defence coming up fast, Ed placed an inch perfect chip over the top for centre Alex Walder to race onto and score under the posts and convert his own try.

Chew came back with a vengeance, breaking the line on numerous occasions, only to be hauled back with heroic tackling from Walder and his fellow backs. It was only a matter of time before the pressure told and Chew worked a try under the posts for a converted score on the stroke of half time.

Turning round with the wind at their backs, the Sharks forwards started to gain their lionshare of possession with Ben Anstead, Nathan Carey, Hadley Stevenson O'Shea, Oli Povey and Josh Connock making powerful surges. The Sharks midfield of Toby Baxter, Ryan Pearch, James Copeland, Moss and Walder started to dictate that the game would be played in the Chew half. Horrible conditions led to many handling errors and subsequent scrums, so credit to the Sharks front five including Jay Ragoo, Ben Ingle, Kearney Day, Dan Swaby and Will Magramallis for gaining scrum ascendency.

Possession and territory eventually led to full back Noah Holmes Macadam creating the space for flying winger Jamie Whitfield to finish well. Wave after wave of Shark attacks were repelled by a brave and well organised Chew defence, but in the last minute, Sharks continual pressure eventually created the space for Josh Adams to finish well, rounded off with a superb conversion from Walder.

Given the conditions, this was an excellent game from both sides and Sharks can be pleased with the way they maintained their intensity throughout the whole match.
