Pacy backs wade through the mud

With injuries and impending exams taking their toll on availability, Sharks took only 15 players to challenge a side who were looking to exact revenge for a comprehensive defeat inflicted on them in the season opener. Gordano rarely got into top gear but Thornbury struggled to contain the visitors who put together an aggressive performance that was more than enough to win a game curtailed by a second half injury.

Sharks made a blistering start winning an early ten yard lineout, feeding the ball across the Backs for winger Jamie Whitfield to score under the posts. Five minutes later a close range scrum won the ball for Fly half Alex Walder to reverse pass to centre Josh Adams to open his account. Stung into action, the home side put some promising moves together and Sharks conceded a number of penalties which looked like costing them points until a stunning defensive tackle from James Copeland on the line seemed to demoralise the attackers and thereafter they rarely threatened the scoreline. On the half hour, Whitfield doubled his tally after collecting a clearance and running the length of the field brushing off Thorns on his way through. With the interval approaching, Whitfield got his hat trick with another twisting run through the hapless defence and then second row James Grindle scored a well worked team move in the corner.

Gordano were caught napping at the restart when Thorns got off the mark with a slick move off the back of a 22 yard scrum but normal service resumed minutes later when Josh Adams got his second after the ball was passed the full width of the pitch. The final try was taken by Full back Noah Holmes Mcadam through the middle following another strong run from Whitfield. Shortly afterwards the match was brought to a close following a neck injury to one of the Thornbury team.

This was a convincing victory and whilst Thornbury rarely posed a significant threat, Sharks dominated the match from the outset with superior fitness and technical ability. That said, Gordano often made hard work of it sometimes failing to see the easier wide scoring options in favour of relying on pace and strength through the middle. A solid show from the Forwards was especially satisfying since they were most affected by unavailability this week.

Gordano RFC wish to extend their best wishes for a full recovery to the injured Thornbury player
