Gordano Sharks RFC U16s travelled to Frampton Cotterell for their first game of the season. The team was decimated by late cry-offs, but 18 players turned up determined to put on a great show.
The first 10 to 15 minutes were quite even, with Gordano's backrow of Charlie Geary, Sam Hodge and Louis Wall putting in some big hits.
The first score came from Gordano winning ball in their own 22, the ball was spun wide to 'Man-of-the-Match' Finn Murphy who weaved through several defenders on an 80 yard run to the line. The extras were added by Lewis Eaves on his debut.
Jack Pope was hitting his line out jumpers, Alex Reynolds and Charlie Geary, with great lifting by Callum Corcoran. Props Tom Instance & Curtis Southey were outstanding in the tight and the loose.
A second try soon followed from speedster Harrison Williams, with Eaves again converting. Ben Beacham followed up a Murphy break for the third try under the posts, with Eaves converting. Just before half-time, Lewis Leaker notched another try following great work by Sam Ashbee for a 26-nil lead.
Gordano made some changes at half time, and the appearance of Connor Fairclough, Eddie Tovey & Harry Purnell only added to Gordano's hard tackling and chaotic running from anywhere on the pitch.
Playing uphill in the second half allowed Gordano to pick up long kicks and run them back with interest. Great tackling in midfield resulted in mistakes by the hosts as Shay Ford notched two more tries and Eaves converted one for a final score of 38-nil.
All in all, what a way to start the new season!
