On a night where gordano RFC were celebrating 30 years at caswell lane their 1St team knocked out cup favourites Avonmouth in Bristol combination vase in fantastic fashion.
The match started with a traditional derby day physicality, with both teams trying to get the upper hand early on. Avonmouth where the first to score with a penalty goal from 30meters out. With a stiff breeze behind them Avonmouth where able to get good field position and from a 5 meter lineout they scored the first try of the game. 0-8.
This didn't dampen the spirits of the home team as they where just starting to break the tackles and get some off loads in. After some great spoiling at an Avonmouth lineout gordano where in Avonmouths 22 and building the phases and it wasn't long till Jack Thomas scored under the posts, conversion added by Sam hodge 7-8. Gordano finished the half the stronger team with the playing with confidence they Harry ashwin scored a great team try that started from thier own 22. Converted again by hodge 14-8 at half time.
Avonmouth clearly where given an earful at half time and came our strong and where soon back in the lead with there own try under the post 14-15. Gordano didn't panic and with the 150+ supporters on the side cheering them on they raised their game to dominated the rest of the half. First was a try out wide for Ben Wilson with again has converted brilliantly by hodge before hodge added a pen to take the gordano more than 1 score ahead. With time coming to and end the game was wrapped up when Joe Rowsells cross field kick wasn't collected by the Avonmouth winger and Jack Hendy jumping on the bouncing ball just before going dead. 29-15 with 2 mins to play. Avonmouth weren't finished and scored on the last play of the game but that didn't dampen the celebration at the final whistle. Final score 29-22
A fantastic night for the club and the team, it was a great squad performance that had no one person that stood out from the rest. Let's hope this is just the start of future success.
