Was it a penalty try?

Gordan's attempt to topple 2nd place Tor on Saturday came very close but ultimately they had to settle for a losing bonus point and to reflect on another game that could so easily have won.

As the season nears its finally the luck certainly seems to have run out at Caswell Lane. Tor who look odds on to secure a promotion play off spot were street wise and efficient but were outplayed by the young Gordano team in many facets of play.

Despite conceding many KG to the Glastonbury side, Gordano bossed the set piece. They soon had the Tor pack travelling back at a rate of knots. This dominance gave Gordano the majority of possession. Playing in a very strong wind in the first half, Gordano showed all the attacking enterprise. The scrum was becoming a real weapon and the more experienced opposition front row began standing up and turning in in an attempt to even things up. This tactic started to prevent Gordano getting as much good ball as they had done. The ball they did get was slowed up by Tor managing to get bodies on the floor to slow it up.

It was Tor who managed to score first when they capitalised on defensive error to score in the corner. Going into the break at only 7 points adrift gave Gordano heart that they could turn things around in the 2nd half with the advantage of a tail wind.

Tor started the 2nd half in better form. They managed to keep hold of the ball and used their rolling maul to good effect. When the Tor maul appeared to splinter, a Gordano forward was adjudged to be off side. A quickly taken penalty lead to a try that gave Tor a 12 point lead.

Gordano felt aggrieved at having conceded another score and soon took the battle back to Tor. For the next 25 minutes there was only one side in the contest. Tor were forced to concede penalty after penalty at the breakdown to prevent Gordano's attacks from resulting in scores. The pressure finally told when Owen Abbott crossed the line and Joe Rowsell added the conversion at the 70 minute point.

With the clock ticking down and only 5 points behind, Gordano got valuable field position and another penalty within 10 metres of the Tor line. Tor's scrum split, dropped and stood up several times and had to be re set. When the ball did come out Gordano conceded a penalty of their own and the game slipped away.

Meanwhile the 2nd team beat neighbours Nailsea and Backewell 22 - 5.
Next Saturday, Gordano travel to Minehead
