1st XV find their wet game to defeat a strong WSM 2nd XV.

A team of volunteers lead by club captain, Paul Winward worked tirelessly to hold back the tide and get this game on. Despite the first team pitch being underwater, they managed to sweep enough water from the bottom pitch to allow the game to be safely played.

Playing with a gale force wind ion the first half, Gordano failed to make the most of a couple of scoring opportunities that came their way. Weston were fierce in defence and their large aggressive pack managed to keep hold of the ball for long periods of time to prevent Gordano maintaining pressure on them. Weston were clearly out to impress their first team coaching team who were watching the match.

At half time with the scores at nil - nil, Weston fancied their chances of securing the win and staying one place ahead of Gordano in the Somerset Premier League table.

Gordano had learnt some lessons from the first half and played the elements superbly well in the second period.

After ten minutes of concerted pressure, Weston's defence finally gave way and scrum half Sean Leadbeater squeezed through a tiny gap to open the scoring. Joe Rowsell converted. Weston soon got on the scoreboard themselves when they kicked a penalty. Gordano maintained ascendancy in terms of possession and they managed to frustrate Weston's attempt to get back in the match. Flanker Ben Wilson was superb throughout. His tackle count was the highest on the pitch as was his number of ball carries. He also dominated the lineout, both on his throw and the oppositions. Tom Arnall and Andre Bailey were also players in the Gordano pack that showed great determination to keep Gordano's promotion hopes alive.

With 10 minutes remaining Leadbeater switched the direction of attack to feed the wing and create an unassailable lead with Gordano's second try of the afternoon.

Typically, Weston refused to give up and scored a try of their own in the final play of the game.

Coach Kevin Instance said "in the conditions, this was never going to be feast of rugby but the lads performed fantastically well to secure the win. After a frutrating period of unavailabilities, injuries and posponed matches , the final run in to the season puts the prospect of promotion very much back in our own hands."

Next week they travel to St Bernadettes Old Boys in Bristol hoping to secure another victory.
