CONTRARY to the report last week, Gordano entertained St Bernadette’s Old Boys at Caswell Lane. They face second-place Stothert and Pitt on Saturday.
In blustery conditions, Gordano had a good warm-up for Saturday’s top of the table clash by scoring eight tries and dominating the Knowle outfit. St Bernadettes were promoted into Somerset Premier last season and have fared reasonably well so far this season, but Gordano’s pace, power and greater game awareness told from the start.
Several players put in good performances. Half-backs Chris Worgan and Sean Leadbeater are getting a good understanding and are starting to control games.
The centre pairing of Jack Hendy and Owen Abbott are reaping the benefits of space by scoring three tries between them, while full-back Joe Rowsell also crossed for two. Jack Thomas and Kaine Southey also got on the scoresheet.
Prop Matt Steven is worthy of mention for his work in the scrum and also his domination of the restart.
The best try of the day was scored by Tom Arnall. Owen Abbott burst through a gap and made 20 yards before being brought down just short of the line. No 8 Arnall was on hand to keep the move alive and used his strength to touch down.
Arnall was strong in attack and defence and grafted well to create ball for others and was a well deserved man of the match.
Gordano will expect a tougher test on Saturday in Bath, but this bonus point win will give them confidence and stand them in good stead to remain at the top of Somerset Premier League.
Gordano 2nds travelled to Clevedon where they lost 23-12 and slipped to third place in Somerset 2 North.
