GORDANO had a double celebration when they took the scalp of Yatton in the local derby fixture at Caswell Lane.

When the sides were drawn against each other in the first round of the Bristol Combination Bowl, they decided to make the league fixture a double header with the winners progressing into the next round of the cup and also taking the league points.

Yatton have enjoyed a higher league status than Gordano in recent seasons, so this is the first time the two sides have met in a competitive fixture for more than eight years.

Despite Gordano having won their first two league games of the season, they were expecting this game to be stern test and good gauge of the progress the squad has made.

The stalemate was broken after six minutes when flanker Joe Harris broke down the wing and popped the ball the fellow back rower Lee Worgan to cross the line. Yatton scored next when their player re-gathered a charged down kick and went over for a converted try.

Gordano began to dominate the set piece and started to look increasingly threatening with the ball. This pressure began to tell as Yatton gave away a succession of penalties.

This eventually resulted in a yellow card being produced. Playing against 14 players, fly half Chris Worgan appeared to have crossed the line but the referee adjudged that he had been held up. His brother Lee managed to get over the line from the ensuing scrum.

Early in the second half, a winger Josh Richards found space to sneak over in the corner. The scoring was rounded off by Lee Worgan claiming his hat-trick. Two conversions from Joe Rowsell made the final score 29-7 and another bonus point win for Gordano to keep them at the top of Somerset Premier League.

Several players made big contributions including scrum-half Sean Leadbeater, locks Matt Rolling and Andre Bailey. It would seem hard to look past Lee Worgan for man of the match, but Joe Rowsell’s assured performance at full back made him the worthy winner of this accolade.

Gordano second team travelled to Walcot and came away with a convincing 51-0 win to retain their unbeaten status at the top of Somerset 2 North and yet to concede a point.

With the third team winning also against Barton Hill, it was a successful afternoon for the club, who after three weeks of the season have played nine, won eight and drawn one throughout the senior men’s section of the club.

On Saturday, the first team entertain Keynsham, while the seconds host Weston thirds. With several players coming back from injury and being available, both teams will be aiming to secure their top of the table positions.
