Gordano started their league season in the the best possible fashion with a bonus point win at home to Wiveliscombe. With a squad containing 5 new players, plus 3 that didn't play at the the club at all last season, there were always going to be some teething problems.
Gordano appeared to have grasped the new scrum engagement process much better than their opponents. They were soon shoving the Wivvy pack backwards at a rate of knots. The lineout was going well too. New boys Curtis Dash and Dan Warner-Meanwell were comfortably winning their own ball at the lineout and were also snaffling a fair share of the opponents throws also.
Scrum Half Sean Leadbetter kept the pack going through their phases and started to create many scoring opportunities. Amazingly, despite the abundance of possession and territory it wasn't until the 30th minute that Gordano started to make an impression on the scoreboard through a Joe Rowsall penalty. He quickly followed this up when concerted pressure finally told and Rowsall went through a huge gap and under the posts.
In the closing minutes of the first half Tim Statton rounded off a push over try.
17 - 0 at half time appeared to be a sufficient cushion to have won the game and to press on for the four try bonus point in the second half. This was achieved by two further tries from Statton. Joe Rowsell crossed the line for a second time late on to round off the scoreline at 38 - 3.
Although there were several missed opportunities and still much to work on, this was a good first outing of the season and demonstrates the potential this young squad has in their 2013-14 Somerset Premiership campaign.
Next week they travel to Bristol Barbarians whilst the 2nd team travel to Oldfield in Bath to start their league season.
