Gordano centre Chris Worgan runs in a late try as his team defeat Weston 2nd XV 32-29.

GORDANO returned to winning ways at Weston against a well-drilled and quick Weston reserve team in Somerset Premier League.

The Weston side have shown good form since Christmas and Gordano knew that they were going to have to be at their best to get a win.

Weston began the contest trying to out muscle the Gordano pack, but never managed to achieve this and would have fared better had they given more ball to their lively backline

Gordano repelled the early attacks and soon got on the scoreboard when some excellent patience near to the Weston line eventually told when fly-half Aaron French exploited a gap and scored the opening try.

This was soon followed up by a training ground move that put wing Harry Lancely in for the first of his two tries of the
afternoon. Weston kicked a penalty to make the half-time score 10-3.

Three tries in the first 20 minutes of the second half from Lancely, full-back Ash Cottrell and centre Joe Harris sewed up the try bonus point and appeared to put the result beyond doubt.

Leading 27-3 with less than 20 minutes to go, the Weston coaches rang the changes and they capitalised on some sloppy defending to cross for their first try under the posts.

Having got the knack of scoring they repeated it three more times in the next 10 minutes and by converting three of these tries, Weston took the lead by two points.

Gordano dug deep and showed a collective will to reclaim the lead. Centre Chris Worgan showed the others the way by turning over a ball and storming through the defence to score a try and give Gordano a three point lead, which they held to the end.

Coach Kevin Instance said: “Although the lapse in
concentration gave Weston four tries in a short period was disappointing, the character shown by the team to correct the mistakes was outstanding and will stand us in good stead for other tough matches to come.”

Gordano are away next Saturday to Imperial, who they have also drawn in the quarter-final of the Senior Somerset Vase. That match will also be away on February 12.
