1st XV win to secure the Somerset Premier 2018 title

Gordano Cliched the somerset league tittle with at tense game away at tor. on a hot afternoon Gordano were looking to wrap up the league with a simple victory against 2nd from bottom Tor but Tor had some old players back in for a must win game for themselves.

Gordano were hit with injuries in the week with Carl Petch and Tim Statton not passing fitness tests and during the warm up Sam Hodge had to pull out due to a hip injury. lucky enough mike dyer was on hand as a travelling reserve as there were a few more players who were struggling after a tough league campaign. The match started well for gordano who`s power up front was making great yardage but they were unable to get the early score they were looking for. it took up until the 17th minute when winger Jordan Mitchell over on the wing for a 5-0 lead. Gords took there foot of the gas after that try and tor were building confidence and started to play like the team for last season who finished 4th in the league and with 10 minutes left in the half they levelled the scores with a try of their own. Gordano woke up after that and finished the half strongly and fly half Dyer sliced his way though the defence to score, Poulson added the conversion for a half time lead.

The 2nd half started well for gordano as Captain Tom Arnall was handed the ball to crash though a gap to score, again Poulson added the extras. at this point the large travelling support were hoping that the floodgate would open up and an easy victory was about to happen but Gordano took their foot of the gas and tor, fighting for their lives got back into the game and score 2 quick trys to bring the score to 19-15. With supporters on the sidelines holding their breath the gordano players got together and raise the tempo and went a little more direct just to build some phases and with 15 mintues to go Prop Harry Ashwin relieved the pressure with a well worked try, conversion added 26-15 and with 5 minutes to got scrum half matt poulson put the game to bed with a try of his own to extend the lead to 31-15. Tor went looking for their 4th try but solid defence by Steve Brown and Stuart Harris stopped them picking up a bonus point. Final Score Gordano 31 Tor 15.

This wasn't the best that Gordano have played all year but with players just being held together by tape and the pressure of the occasion, it was a solid victory at a place that Gordano haven't had the best of history's. The win, Gordano`s 21st in the league this season, takes them to their 2nd league tittle in 3 years. Next season Gordano will be playing local rivals Clevedon and Avonmouth, who Gords beat this season in the Bristol Combination cup. Club Chairman Ian pope said "the season has been a massive success on and off the field. The club is building for the future and the 1st promotion gives the whole club a boost." Head Coach Chris Hurd said " I am so proud of what the boys have achieved this year, we are all ways looking to get better and the lads have stepped up to the plate week in and week out."

Gordano can now have a well earned rest and come back next season ready to step up to the next challenge.
