Gordano Rugby Football Club

Match abandoned

by Andy Davies

AFTER a week’s rest caused by Old Sullians pulling out of the Somerset Vase last Saturday and giving Gordano a bye into the next round, the Sharks got off to the worst possible start away at Wiveliscombe

With barely five minutes on the clock, Gordano conceded a soft score. A defensive mix up gave the Wivvy back line enough space to cross for the first try. Gordano showed great spirit to bounce back almost immediately.

The Sharks pack began to dominate and were soon destroying the home scrum. From some of this pressure, the ball was spun wide to wing Owen Abbott, who scored for the visitors. Joe Rowsall was unable to add the conversion.

Despite having most of the possession, a well-worked move again exposed the Gordano defence and Wivvy were now leading 14-5.

Gordano ended the first-half in control. When the Wivvy full-back knocked on under his posts, Gordano’s dominant scrum made short work of pushing them back over their own goal line, with No 8 Mike Yandall touching down.

Gordano again worked their way to the Wivvy line and had a succession of scrums and penalties. Inexplicably, the referee didn’t consider a penalty try after the fifth penalty awarded to Gordano at successive scrums. Gordano were unable to turn this pressure into points and the score remained 14-12 at half-time.

During the break, the referee announced that he had injured his knee and was unable to continue. Options were considered, but it was decided that the game would have to be abandoned and re-played at a later date.

Last year’s captain Aaron French made his return following a broken elbow and made a great contribution to the team’s performance. Young Lock Ben Wilson, making only his second first team performance, looked assured.

On Saturday, Gordano entertain Stothert and Pitt at Caswell Lane (2.30pm).
