Gordano U14s welcomed their much larger opponents to compete in the final game of the season.
After several weeks of hard training the starting line up was a reward for the effort shown at the previous weeks sessions.
From the start The Sharks showed many improvements and indeed enjoyed the majority of posession and a willingness to move the ball and take risks.
Unfortuantely this proved costly as dropped passes and lack of support at times allowed several of the large and athletic Yatton players to sieze on the mistakes and run the length of the pitch.
Gordano to their credit kept going and just before half time scored the only team try of the half. Good build up play and a quick penalty tap allowed Lewis Leaker
to put full back Shay Ford over the line. Captain Leaker adding the extras. Half time : Gordano 7 Yatton 17
The second half saw Yatton take the game to Gordano and whilst the sharks tried their hardest to compete at the breakdown, the much larger Yatton side were very hard to contain. With the extra possesion they were enjoying they were able to move the ball to their strike runners and the points came thick and fast.
Gordano still tried to move the ball and play quick but tired legs and the loss of several players to knocks made this difficult. To the applause of the crowd Gordano kept going to the end and once again ended the half with the last score. Leaker realeasing the ever present Jordan Mitchell
to score wide out. Leaker adding the extras.
Special mentions go to Sam Hodge
for his defensive effort, Eddie Tovey
, Harry Purnell
and Charlie Geary
for their work rate up front against much larger opposition and Sam Ashbee
whose promise at Fly half is beginning to show.
The man of the match award goes to scrum half Lewis Leaker
who never stopped trying to take the game to the opposition, set up both tries, defended as ever throughout and despite struggling with injury refused to leave the pitch even when he knew his team were beaten. A show of character that pleased all the coaches and hopefully will lead the way for a similar attitude from the whole squad next season.
Thanks to Ian Pope
for another efficient refereeing display, and also thanks to the Yatton squad and coaches who despite a large victory were both respectful and praise worthy to the home side.
Final Score : Gordano 14 Yatton 48
